The First Security System for Shapefiles

In This Issue
In this January 2012 edition of GeoView, we explore the term “Big Data” and how its impact has increased the demand for information management specialists throughout the world, including the geospatial realm. We also travel to Aspen, Colorado to get an inside scoop on the annual ESPN Winter X Games and the history behind this extreme competition. Wrapping up, we take an in-depth look at the term “feature class” for our Word of the Month and help explain the terminology behind one of the most basic and widely used entities in the geospatial world.

Big Data
According to IBM, every day, we create 2.5 quintillion bytes of data–so much that 90% of the data in the world today has been created in the last two years alone. This data comes from everywhere: from sensors used to gather climate information, posts to social media sites, digital pictures and videos posted online, transaction records of online purchases, and from cell phone GPS signals to name a few. This data is “Big Data”.

AOI – Aspen and the
Winter X Games

imageInspiration can be found in any manner of things. People, places and activities all can provide us with that special feeling of awe.For some of us, it’s easier to get that awe from watching others perform amazing acts of athleticism (safer too). The city of Aspen, Colorado is home to the annual ESPNWinter X Games. Aspen (and the Winter X Games) is an Olympic venue that tests the character, power, and dynamism of “extremesports” athletes like skiers, snowboarders, and snowmobilers.

Gone Fishing: The Arapaima
imageAs one of the largest freshwater fish in the world, the South American Arapaima is a life source of food and tourism for the native people of Amazon basin. With lengths reaching more than 6 feet and weighing in at a record of 400lbs this fishy mammoth is one of the most sought after food fish species in South America. Because the Arapaima produces “large, boneless fish steaks” it is considered a delicacy and has therefore received some much needed protection from the Brazilian government.

Pleiades-1 Launched
December 16, 2011

imageOn December 16, 2011, a Soyuz rocket launched Pléiades 1a, a very high-resolution optical satellite, from the Guiana Space Centre (CSG). The launcher lifted off at 02:02:30 UTC and satellite separation occurred at 02:58 UTC over Perth, Australia. The satellite’s solar panels deployed 30 seconds later.

Winter Solstice
imageHappy Winter Solstice!  Often the most overlooked day, the winter solstice has a significant historical and a physical presence in our lives.  Physically, or should I say astronomically, it is the moment when the 23.5 degree axial tilt of the earth is away from the sun. Of course this happens twice a year, once for the southern hemisphere and six-months later for the northern hemisphere. Assuming one is viewing above the Tropic of Cancer, the northern hemisphere winter solstice is December 22 this year.

In Focus:
Coal, Not Just for Stockings

imageSouth Africa is hoping to wean itself off of coal-powered plants, and the country is hoping to turn to nuclear power to fill the void. Their motives for the switch are an aim to reduce greenhouse gas emissions through a cleaner energy source, though after the tragedy at Fukushima, it has some experts questioning the move. South Africa is currently among the top 20 emitters per capita of carbon dioxide, and a move to nuclear energy would greatly reduce their footprint.

The National Civil Rights Museum
imageOn April 4th, 1968, Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated in Memphis, Tennessee on the balcony of room 306 at the Lorraine Motel. King is best remembered for his role in the Civil Rights movement of the 1950s and 1960s, and his legacy lives on as one of peace, fellowship, and equality. In 1957 King, along with others, founded the Southern Christian Leadership Conference to organize the numbers of black churches in non-violent demonstrations for civil rights reform.

Word of the Month – Feature Class
In this month’s edition of WOM, we going to get down to the “nitty-griddy” on feature class.  A feature is a representation of a single entry on a map.  For example, a line could represent a road, elevation or a physical object like a river.  One can tell what that line represents by the attribute information that is attached to its features.  A feature consists of a unique identifier, one or more lists of coordinates, orientation information and a label.
