The Area of Interest
Niagara Falls

Considered one of the seven forgotten wonders of the world, Niagara Falls is a breathtaking tourist destination. Located on the Niagara River, it acts as an international water barrier separating the United States from Canada. It is composed of two major sections, the Horseshoe Falls on the Canadian side, and the American Falls on the U.S. side. These two sections are separated by Goat Island, a popular destination on the American side accessible by foot, car or trackless train. It derives its name from a herd of goats that was kept on the island in the late 1700s, but due to an extremely harsh winter, only one goat survived. Also included in Niagara Falls is another smaller waterfall called Bridal Veil Falls. At its base is the Cave of the Winds which provides a protective barrier from the runoff - and is a very kitschy place for people to get married – hence its name. The name Niagara is believed to be derived from “Niagagarega” who were a local branch of the Iroquois Nation that resided in the area when French settlers arrived in the 1700s.

Do You Know Who Has Your Mapping Data?

If Not, Protect it With VectorLock – The First Security System For Shapefiles

As the importance of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) departments have grown in both corporations and governments alike, so too has the ‘value’ of the datasets that GIS professionals create, maintain and update. These organizations invest significant resources on proprietary and sensitive geographic databases with no effective way to secure them from internal and external threats. As Ernst and Young states in Information Security in a Borderless World (April 2011), "It's time to rethink information security programs and the strategies organizations should use to keep their most valuable assets safe."

A Video Introduction to VectorLock - The First Security System for Shapefiles

eMap International's patented technology, VectorLock, is the first and only security system for shapefiles. Since its launch in June, VectorLock has seen significant interest from a wide variety of markets including oil and gas, utilities, governments and engineering firms. With VectorLock, GIS administrators are able to protect their proprietary shapefile information from internal and external security threats.

Specifics on the Q2 2011 US-Wide Parcel Layer Release

Officially released last month by CoreLogic, the Q2 2011 US-wide ParcelPoint data layer features 14 new counties as well as updates to nearly 12.1% of the counties currently available. In this release, there were over 2,100,000 parcel points and polygons added to the national database through the addition of new counties and through the update of those already for sale.

Custom US Parcel Pricing for Pipelines, Transmission Systems and Corridors

Since eMap introduced its valued customers to the CoreLogic US ParcelPoint layer, it has been a popular offering for many markets including those in energy, utility and engineering. As a standardized US parcel dataset, ParcelPoint has saved geospatial professionals both time and effort in the sourcing, preparation and updates of their crucial land ownership records. With more than 2,200 counties in the database, CoreLogic's ParcelPoint is by far the most extensive source for land ownership records that can be found in a single location.

Satellites in the News - Aquarius

On June 10th of this year, NASA, partnering with Argentina’s Comisión Nacional deActividades Espaciales (CONAE), launched the Aquarius instrument into orbit at 657 kilometers above Earth’s surface. The Aquarius instrument is aptly named as its principle goal is to map the surface of the Earth’s oceans. The satellite is capable of mapping the entire Earth’s sea surface salinity once every seven days. This will allow researchers to compare the seas’ salinity on a monthly, seasonal and yearly basis.

Gone Fishing – Invasion of the Snakehead

In the US we have seen our fair share of invasive species including the Peacock Bass that made its way from the depths of the Amazon River to waters of South Florida; or the wild boar that has all but taken over most of North America. Truth be told, you probably encounter many invasive species throughout your lifetime that have been around for so long that are, for the most part, now considered native, such as dogs, cats and even elk. But there is one creature that has sounded the alarm for concern and even panic, the freshwater snakehead.

In Focus – Three Gorges Dam

The Three Gorges Dam is a hydroelectric dam located in the Hubei Province of China. It spans the Yangtze River near Sandouping and is the world’s largest power facility in terms of capacity at 18,200 megawatts. The dam body was completed in 2006, and the final components for it to be functional were completed in late 2008. Beyond producing electricity, Three Gorges also increases shipping capacity and helps control flooding. Plans for the dam started as far back as 1919, but the construction didn’t start until December 1994 due to many different reasons including economics, the lack of necessary engineering expertise and political interference.

High Resolution Satellite Imagery Shows an Increase in Rwanda's Forest Cover

In the late 1980s, the country of Rwanda's image began to shift from a socially and environmentally progressive society to one that had fallen on hard times due to a decrease in agricultural output and governmental change. Outside interest from countries supplying aid also began to change with their desire to see democratic reform. This eventually led to a civil war in 1990, where the Rwandan Patriotic Front, a rebel movement comprised of Tutsis, clashed with government and military fighters comprised of Hutus. In 1994, Hutus took control of the government and issued orders to exterminate all Tutsis.

Q: "Ongoing Geospatial Education?" A: "Penn State."

Keeping technologically current in the rapidly changing geospatial profession is demanding for both young professionals and for employers that need their staff to be responsive to a client’s evolving geospatial needs. The lightning speed at which GIS, imagery, LiDAR, mapping and a host of geospatial technologies and applications is evolving is startling and at times leaves even the most ardent professional scratching their head for answers. So how do you stay current? In two words, Penn State.

Word of the Month - Spectral Band

In this edition of WOM we start a three part series on a fundamental concept in satellite and aerial imagery, the spectral band, and then build on this concept with future WOMs on the panchromatic and multispectral bands. In the first part of this series, we focus on the fundamentals of the spectral band with a discussion of the photon and its wavelength-frequency relationship. We then follow the path of the photon (or light) through the human eye; and conclude by comparing the spectral bands of satellite and aerial sensors to the eye’s response to light.

The Beaten Path – The Strategic Petroleum Reserves

The United States Strategic Petroleum Reserves (SRP) are the largest emergency oil reserves in the world with the capacity to hold up to 727 million barrels. The oil reserves are divided into two different categories, sweet and sour. The term sweet refers to a maximum sulfur content of .50%, while sour allows for up to 1.99% sulfur content. Approximately 60% of the oil in reserves is the lesser desirable sour oil; and there is a $15 discount in value for each barrel of sour oil. As such, the total SPR value is estimated at $85 billion dollars.
