The Area of Interest
Midan Al-Tahrir Square; Cair, Egypt
Midan Al-Tahrir, or more popularly known as Tahrir Square or Liberation Square, has become a central focus in Egypt's historical quest for democracy through peaceful revolution. The events taking place across the Mid-East and Africa started in Tunisia with the martyring of a fruit dealer. The revolutionary energy soon spread to Egypt where millions of oppressed Egyptians took to the streets of Tahrir Square to show their frustration with the dictatorial regime and to state their desire for a democratic nation.

Tunisian Migrants in Lampedusa: SPOT-5 and OceanWay Keep Track of Maritime Picture
Some 4,000 Tunisian migrants flocked to the island of Lampedusa in makeshift boats between February 11th and 13th following the Tunisian democratic transition.
Faced with this sudden and massive influx, the Italian government declared a humanitarian state of emergency on the island.
Two SPOT-5 images and the OceanWay platform helped keep track of the maritime picture.
OceanWay satellite-based maritime surveillance platform.
Implementing the maritime surveillance platform
SPOT-5 was tasked to track the maritime picture around Lampedusa.
An image acquired on February 15th was compared with a recent archive image from February 5th. Both images were processed to level 2A and then analyzed by the OceanWay platform.
OceanWay activity report
The activity report detailed the location, heading, movements and behavior of boats in the vicinity.
On February 5th, 18 boats were identified, the smallest of them was estimated to be 4-meters long. And then on February 15th, less than 4 hours after image acquisition, 6 boats were detected, including 2 military vessels patrolling south of the island.
A sample OceanWay report from February 5th.
