Data In Transit – 2009-2010 Marcellus Aerial Imagery

Change has come to Pennsylvania. The nation’s first oil and gas play is once again experiencing high levels of interest by prospectors. Recent statistics from the Department of Environmental Protection show that the number of gas wells drilled across the state has more than tripled over the past three years and there are little signs of that trend slowing down.

Hunting Down Archaeology Sites with High-Resolution Satellite Imagery

With the help of high-resolution satellite imagery, archaeologists are making new discoveries in some of the most remote areas of the world. Dr. Sarah Parcak, an archaeologist from the University of Alabama-Birmingham and current eMap International customer, has found hundreds of new research areas in middle Egypt and the eastern Nile Delta. In 2003-04, she confirmed 132 sites that were initially mapped through the use of satellite imagery, 83 of which had never been visited or recorded - some of the discoveries included lost cities, temples and ancient enclosure walls.

SPOT Satellites Follow Preparations for the Big Event in South Africa: The World Cup 2010i

Soccer City will host the opening and closing ceremonies of the 19th FIFA World Cup in South Africa, the first to be held on the African continent. EADS Astrium subsidiary Spot Image has been tracking progress of refurbishment work at this symbolic stadium since 2006 with the KOMPSAT-2 and SPOT 5 satellites. Two images acquired in 2010 highlight work completed around the stadium in preparation for the four-yearly soccerfest.

GeoEye Delivers the First ICAO Compliant Airport Mapping Database

As part of our ongoing effort to provide our customers with timely and accurate geospatial information and services, GeoEye recently signed an agreement with Malaysia Airport Holdings Berhad’s Technical Services Division (MAHB) to provide the first commercial high-resolution Airport Mapping Database (AMDB) of Kuala Lumpur International Airport. This particular AMDB was created using color stereo imagery from GeoEye’s IKONOS satellite from which our AMDB GIS Services team then extracted the three-dimensional models of the airport, terrain and any flight safety obstacles. The end-product meets the International Civil Aviation Organization’s (ICAO) Area-2 and Area-3 reporting requirements and will be used for planning airport operations and improvements; and to help ensure adherence to aviation safety regulations.
