The World's Most Advanced Satellite, WorldView-2, is Operational and Accepting Orders
January 4, 2010 marks a historic day for GIS and Remote Sensing professionals as it was this date that the world's most advanced satellite, WorldView-2, was certified as fully tested and operational and began tasking commercial orders. As such, in this edition of GeoView, eMap is pleased to announce that we are now accepting tasking (and archive, all be it limited at the time) orders for WV2 high-resolution satellite imagery.
As the world's most advanced satellite, WorldView-2 offers four distinct advantages:
(1) With 8 bands of 2-meter multispectral data, no other high-resolution satellite comes close to the spectral information that WV2 can provide.
- WV2 has the 4 traditional multispectral bands (i.e. Blue, Green, Red and NIR) plus 4 new bands (i.e. Coastal, Yellow, Red Edge and NIR2).
- Extra spectral information will produce truer colors, improve spectral analysis and allow you to differentiate more classes in automated feature extraction.
(2) Orthoimagery accuracies without the need for ground control.
- Initial tests of WV2 data show that georeferenced accuracies typically exceed 6-m CE90%.
- Introduction of minimal ground control should allow for submeter XYZ accuracies.
(3) The maximum resolution for satellite imagery allowed by US government regulations.
- WV2 data is sold with 50-cm panchromatic or pansharpened resolution; and/or 2-m multispectral resolution.

(4) Unrivaled collection capacity in both mono and stereo tasking modes.
- WV2 is the first high-resolution satellite ever launched without any US government funding. As such, 100% of the capacity is reserved for commercial orders - and it shows. Here are some actual tasking feasibilities eMap has received:
- New York City mono collection,
1,000 sq km = 10 days
- India stereo collection,
630 sq km = 5 days
- Entire country of the UAE,
81,000 sq km = 28 days
- Actual collection tests in the last weeks show single day large-area collections of 15,600 sq km in mono mode; and 6,950 sq km in stereo mode. No color satellite can come close to rivaling these figures.
eMap has established an FTP site that contains product samples, pricing and other key WV2 documents. We will be adding additional samples over the coming days as we have had more time to process the data we have received. If you are interested in additional samples, let us know and we will add you to our automated alert mailing list.

We hope you are as excited about the possibilities of WorldView-2 as we are here at eMap. If you have any pricing requests or technical questions please contact us at (720) 470-7988 or bmccarty@emap-int.com. Feasibility requests typically take less than 12 business hours for results so send over your polygons even if the projects are still on the horizon.
More WV2 imagery samples can be found here. We will be adding more samples to this site so check back frequently.
